High School Graduate Gertrude

This photo was taken in 1930, the year Sr. Gertrude graduated from North Union High School in Uniontown, Pa. In our family no one ever talks about her being a beautiful girl, but I think she was STUNNING! Look at those huge dark eyes! By the standards in the U.S. at the time, she would have seemed "dark" and "foreign" or "not American." I should dig up some of the old newspaper reports and book excerpts I have that concern Slovaks as "New Americans" in the early 20th Century. There are many parallels to what racists say about Arabs and Mexicans today.
